What is it?

What is MasterCard PayPass?

PayPass is a new "contactless" payment feature on all Capital One cards. To make a purchase all you have to do is tap your MasterCard with PayPass on the special terminal featuring the MasterCard PayPass symbol at participating merchants.

How does PayPass work?

The Capital One MasterCard with PayPass features an embedded chip and radio frequency antenna.

  • Once you tap your Capital One MasterCard with PayPass at a PayPass-enabled reader, your card transmits your payment details wirelessly. In non-techie terms, this means you no longer have to hand over your card to the merchant to swipe it through a reader.
  • Your account details are communicated to the reader, then processed through the highly-trusted MasterCard acceptance network.
  • Shortly after you tap the reader using your Capital One MasterCard with PayPass, you'll receive payment confirmation. Then you're free to go on your way!

What is the advantage of using PayPass?

It is quick and easy! It's like having exact change wherever you go. You don't have to worry about carrying a lot of cash or keeping track of small cash purchases. And you still can use your Capital One MasterCard with PayPass the "traditional" way at millions of worldwide locations where MasterCard is accepted.

Generally, if you're making a purchase of $50 or less, no signature is necessary. Larger purchases will still require you to sign a sales slip.

What happens if I tap my card by accident?

Nothing. The clerk has to initiate a transaction. When it's time to pay, be sure to tell the clerk you're paying with MasterCard PayPass. Then they'll let you know when it's time to tap.

What happens if I tap my card twice, will I get charged twice?

No. It doesn't matter how many times a card is read by the PayPass reader. The charge will only appear once on your statement. And with $0 fraud liability, you won't get stuck paying for unauthorized purchases.

Do I have to take the card out of my wallet to use it?

No, but it's a good idea if you have more than one MasterCard with PayPass. We recommend that you take out the specific card you'd like to use.
